Hu Hefang Research professor. He was born on July 4£¬1941 in Shanghai. Since he graduated from East China Institute of Chemical Engineering, Shanghai in 1963. He worked in Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics£¬CAS. Since 1964, He worked in Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics,CAS. During 1980 to 1982 he was a visiting scholar of Dept. of Material Scien. And Engin., Univ. of California, Los Angeles, USA.

Before 1980 he worked on new kind of Nd-doped laser glasses, the physical and chemical properties, as well as the manufacture technology of aser glass. Since 1980 his major research work involves the formation and properties of halide glass, fluoride glass and optical fiber, rare-earth doped glass fiber for laser, infrared transmitting glass. He undertook some projects one after another, such as "New kind of infrared optical glass", "Fluoride glass optical fiber with low loss", "Fluoride glass optical fiber and its application", "rare-earth doped glass fiber for lasers", "Glass beads with high refractive index" and so on. In 1990's he received several awards: "Infrared transmitting fluoroaluminate glass" -The 2nd scientific and technical promotion award by Academia Sinica in 1993, "Study on the physical foundation of optical communication in ultra-long wavelength region"-The 2nd Natural Science Award by Academia Sinica in 1995, and another The 2nd scientific and technical promotion award by Shanghai. He has published more than 80 papers. There are six graduated students for MS degree and five graduated students for Ph.D. degree, who have been graduated or are studying under his direction.
